Monkey See...Monkey Do!

As a temporary employee, I was working at a plastic parts manufacturing plant as a machine operator.  My job was simple, and consisted of just removing parts from the machine and packing them in a box.  But, speed was important here too, and I found myself lagging behind some of the other operators.  So, I had to try to find out how I could improve my speed, or it could cost me my job!

Bids on these contracts are very technical and precise.  A certain amount of parts have to be made per hour, or money will not be made on the individaul part and deadlines will not be met either.  So, speed is very important in this business, along with quality.

As I could see it, I was lagging behind about 80 to 100 parts behind everybody else...this was not good!  And, it wouldn't be long before somebody was going to say something to me about it. I couldn't imagine why I was so much slower than everyone else!

Operators were rotated on a daily basis, so there were different things to do everyday.  So, one day, I went in a little early, and I went over the machine in question, where I was having problems, and I watched the operator, to see how and what he was doing.  This man was a company employee of about four years, so he knew what he was doing.

As I observed him, (Monkey See; Monkey Do), I could see why some of the operators were faster than I was.  I was doing everything all wrong, and I would have to change, if I would pick up the speed I needed.  It was all in the technique of doing the job to get the required speed.

After watching him, I felt by changing my ways, I could pick up the speed I needed, and sure enough...the next time I was assigned to the press, I increased my production by over 50 parts, and by the next time I was on the press, I was in the ballgame with all the others!

It was just a matter of implementing Monkey See; Monkey Do, and changing my technique.  And, I probably saved my job in the process.

In my view, one of the most important qualities a person can have,  is to have an
open mind to change for the better
; stubborn; pig-headedness, and "my way or the highway" are all out!

NOTE:  You have to remember, that there are two types of Monkey
See; Monkey Do...the negative and the positive!  We always have to stay with the
positive!
