Persistence/Determination
The real test and the work comes in the time and patience required in many cases to conceive and develop the idea itself in the first place. A few examples;
* The article I wrote, which is entitled; The Importance of Praise. was a toughy. I worked on this piece, on occasion, for about three months without any luck. I tried on two different occasions to write it, tore the page up and in frustration threw the paper away. The words would not fall onto the page. (I write everything long-hand)
About three months after I started taking notes, I was amazed at what happened. I tried again, and about 40 minutes after I started, I had the entire piece written! I couldn't believe it, and there was very little polish work. I emailed the piece to a friend of mine in Houston, and she published it on her site that same day.
* What was even tougher was the idea for the Funny Farm. I conceived the idea for the Funny Farm way back in 1995, and I even wrote the intro for it, as it looks on the Funny Farm page on my site today.
But, it wasn't until the spring of 2002, that I had an idea as to what to do with it. Quite a long time here, and I didn't work on the idea all the time...that would be silly. But, that's how long the idea had been on the books, before I put it to work. (This is my world record for time)
* Another idea that took almost a year to figure out, was how I was going to photograph my wooden friendly octopus. (It was at Octopus Car Wash on display for a while, and I sold over a dozen of them at A/C shows)
Photograph it in an aquarium?; a stream? I couldn't figure out how to do it. So, because I worked for an engineering company at the time, the idea came to me.
One day, I was pouring some foam into an electrical probe, to protect it from the environment, and the idea clicked! Bingo! The use of foam was the answer to build a seascape! So, I cut a cardboard box diagonally and used one half of the box for the project. I poured several layers of form down the sides of the box, and it worked beautifully. I added powered grass (railroad); small sea shells; deadwood; and it looks so realistic!
* For about two or three months, I tried to do something with the word, SPAM, with not much luck. As everyone knows, sending out spam is a no-no. But, I was just trying to do something with the word...examples I tried were as follows; "Smart People Are..."(I got nothing)..."Special People Are..." (I got nothing).
After about two months of fooling around with this...it finally hit! The SpaMobile was created, and a few hours later in the day, the Spam-O-Gram followed.
So, now what I do on my website, is I have a lot of fun sending out my SpaMobile delivering my important Spam-O-Grams about different new things on my site! I've never had any problems with it.
* * *
But realistically...most good ideas don't take anywhere near this long to put to work. Most problems can be solved within hours or days, but I just wanted to give you an idea as to how much time it CAN take if you are determined to make something work. And, those are the key words...determination and time/patience.
Over the years, people have told me how much they like my ideas, but they have no idea how much effort (behind-the-scenes), was put into getting that particular idea.
