Just Say No To Dirty Humor!

What is the difference (in effort), of telling a clean joke, as opposed to telling a dirty joke?  There is none, as far as I'm concerned.

I can never understand why a person would resort to telling a dirty joke in the first place.  What is it?  Peer pressure?  Fitting in with the groupies?  Getting a bigger laugh?  Easier to remember?  I certainly don't have the answer, and I probably never will.

I've been in the humor business for the better part of my life, and I can say, that a person doesn't have to be dirty to be funny.

For these jokesters, who resort to telling dirty jokes and using gross humor to get a laugh, may think they're funny, but they're not.  They're only hurting themselves.  Their image and reputation becomes tarnished and/or damaged, and people distance themselves ...as they should.

A person, who resorts to the use of dirty humor of any kind, is not respectful of others, in my view, and that individual should not be tolerated.  It's especially difficult in the work place, when the jokester may very well be a person with authority such as a lead; a supervisor; manager or even the BOSS!  This can be a delicate situation, but you still don't have to tolerate these joksters, no matter who they are, or what their position is.

I'll share with you a few tips, which may help you deal with these jokesters of dirty humor:

1) Don't Laugh!  If a person tells you a dirty or racial joke, the worst thing you can do is to laugh!  Never, never laugh at the joke!  This way, you leave the jokester standing there waiting for a laugh that never comes!  The jokester may never return, because he didn't get the laugh he wanted in the first place.

2) Bust Up The Joke:  Should the jokester persist in telling you a dirty joke...break it up before the joke gets started.  For example:  The joke gets started...look quickly at your watch...and say, "I've got to run...I'm going to be late for my meeting, " and scamper away, even if it's just to get a drink of water and then return.  By doing this, you've busted up the delivery and timing of the jokester, and you threw it all back into his face!  This technique is especially good when you're dealing with people with authority.

3) Change the subject;  If you're at a social function...just change the subject (by interrupting the jokester), or simply walk away and join others. (you don't need this weenie)

4)  Ignore the jokester:  It's that simple.  Go about your business as if the jokester wasn't even around. A cold, hard stare is always useful.

If a person is not respectful of you in any manner, you don't need them in your life anyway.

All of us have to tolerate people of bad behavior all year long.
So, be decisive...take a stance, feel good about yourself, and just say no to dirty humor!
