The Negative Side of Humor!
Where there is a positive side of things...there is usually a negative side...and, this applies to humor as well.

Unfortunately, there are people in this world, who will do almost anything for money; there are people who will do almost anything for power; there are people who will do almost anything to gain fame; and, there are people who will do almost anything to get a laugh...even if it hurts somebody!

If humor is used in a negative way, it can cause hurt feelings, and can be destructive and damaging as well.

Unfortunetely, negative humor is alive and well , in the form of dirty jokes; ethnic jokes; put-down of others; gross humor, blonde jokes; lawyer jokes; bald jokes, and the list goes on and on.

If you've ever been put down, by those who I refer to as "the
jokesters and people of put-down," who enjoy getting a laugh at somebody else's expense...you know how awful it can sting!

There's a so-called comedian, who travels the country making fun of, and "putting down" the challenged and the disabled...
just to get a laugh!  It's astonishing to see that there are those who would find humor in all this, and would pay to see this criminal.

* I don't see anything funny about a person who has suffered an
illness, or an accident, and will spend the rest of his or her life in a wheelchair.  (This could happen to any of us in an instant)

* I don't see anything funny about a person who was born with a
  deformity.

* I don't see anything funny about a person who is blind; who  has a speech impediment; or hearing loss, and struggles to cope.

* And, I don't see anything funny about a person who has suffered severe burns.  (This could happen to any of us in  house fire)

A decade ago, the senior President Bush said: "What we need
is a kinder gentler nation."  I believe what he was talking about was the behavior displayed by many Americans, and what we are doing to each other:  disrespectful; inconsiderate to each other; resentment; jealousy; road rage and even hate! All this negative behavior is passed on to the children, who spread it around school... until tragedy happens...

                                    An American Tragedy

I was born, and still reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA) and I am of Hispanic decent, which I am proud of.

As a youngster in school, I did not speak the English language well, and kids used to laugh and tease me, because I did not pronounce many words correctly.  It was awful.  It had quite an impact on me during my school days, because I pretty much would not participate in class discussions, and I would never, ever give an oral book report!  I didn't want the kids to laugh at me!  (I crawled into a shell )  But, as time went on, I got better at speaking and writing the language, and the jokesters disapeared out of my life, to my relief.

And today, the American schools are in trouble because there is so much hate and violence, and nobody seems to know the answer to the problem.  To identify the problem is really simple, in my view.

Many kids probably don't have much respect for each other, and there is an epidemic of kids putting down and teasing each other...and, many times (in part)... just to get a laugh!  Kids, just like anybody else, can only take so much harassment, until they reach a breaking point...pick up a gun...and, the shooting starts. It's called pay-back, and then it's not so funny anymore!

The solution?  More police patroling school grounds; more gadgets of technology, etc., are not the answers, in my view.

The answer to this complex problem lies with the parents at home.  Parents MUST take the responsibility to teach their children to be respectful of others;  no teasing or put-down of others is acceptable for any reason.  With respect to teasing and put-down..."everydody does it, so it's okay." It's NOT okay, and it's wrong!

Young people have to be taught at home and in school to stay away from the negative...and, that includes humor.  They have to be taught to get along with each other, and to respect each other.

School administrator's must set aside a few classroom hours each week, to address and deal with this serious problem.which may incororate two of the most important words in the world...
mutual respect!

                                          Think Positive

On the positive side of things, I believe that 95% of the humor out there is of a positive nature, and that's great!  But, the positive must always win out over the negative, before the negative spreads like cancer!

Dirty jokes; gross humor; ethnic jokes; the put-down  and teasing of others...just to get a laugh, is not acceptable!

So, if all of us join together to "just say no" to negative humor... we'll feel better about ourselves, and then we will all get The Last Laugh!  Jer

To all the young people out there...STAY IN SCHOOL!.
