Because of the sour economy, may workers have lost their jobs all across the country, and find themselves working as temporary employees, until something permanent comes along. The company, where several of us temps were assigned, was also experiencing cut-backs and layoffs, as many temps had already been let go. With existing contracts coming to an end, and nothing on the horizon...things didn't look good for any of us. One day, several of us were sitting around talking during a break, when one of the employees began mumbling: "Sir, would you like fries with that hamburger?" "Mam...would you like fries with that hamburger?" A bit puzzled and thinking this man had gone crackers under the pressure, I asked him: "What in the world are you doing?" His response: "Oh, I know I'm going to be laid off, so I'm just practicing for my NEXT job!"! |
