I was born in 1945, so I lived throughout the entire Cold, and for the young people out there, who may not remember much of it, the Cold War was a dangerous saga of two super-powers, pointing nuclear weapons at each other...the (then) Soviet Union and the United States. I was in high school, when the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred, as Soviet ships steamed toward Cuba carrying nuclear weapons, to be placed on the island of Cuba, and President Kennedy stopped it all, with a block-aid of Cuba.
At a young age, I thought this confrontation was going to be the end of the world, and the end of mankind as we know it, as the two super-powers were about to square off...but it didn't happen! The Soviet ships turned around and went back to Russia, and the United States prevailed! A collective sigh of relief for the countries around the world! The United States prevailed because of our strong military, and the American determination to keep peace around the world.
In the lobby of the Veterans Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico (where I live), there is a sign which reads, "Freedom is not free." That's right...freedon is NOT free, and there have thousands of American's who have paid with their lives for freedom around the world! When freedom is threatened...the United States must act!
Throughout the decades, America has kept the peace around the world...in World War I and II...as America got into two wars it didn't want to get into. And, because of its military might, won over the Japanese and the Germans. Tens of thousands of American lives were lost durig these two world wars. Freedom is not free!
In Central America, the United States went down and picked up the sabre-rattling Noriega and put him in jail in Miami; the United States led the way, with the help of the NATO forces in Europe, against Milosevic in Bosnia, where the people in that region finally put him in jail! There's been peace in that part of the world ever since!
The disciples of the devil will always be with us...Hitler; Noriega; Sadaam; Milosevic; Khadafy in Libya. President Reagan sent jet fighters from England to get Khadafy and just missed, but because of this action, there has been peace in the region ever since. Khadafy has also allowed weapons inspectors into his country.
When freedom or peace around the world is threatened, the United States MUST act! As of the last decade or so, the United States has been punched around by these cowards who call themselves terrorists, and by the tragedy of 9/11. Again, the United States has acted, and has invaded the Middle East, where the terrorist's activities originate, and where the American way of life is threatened.
The horrors of 9/11...and not many people in America will forget 9/11...I know I won't...as America was attacked for the first time! This tragic event will live in the minds of American's forever!
Freedom is not free! I joined the U.S. Air Force in 1965, at the height of the Viet Nam war. I did so, because of the draft at that time, and I didn't want to be drafted into the military. And, everyone knows that Viet Nam was a political war and a big mistake! Democracy vs. Communism...I don't think the peasants of Viet Nam cared where they got their bowl of rice from...the Americans or the Russians. The so-called "domino theory," where is one country falls to Communism...all the rest would follow, was thought up by some bonehead in Congress or the Pentagon.
We can't have another Viet Nam in Iraq! But, all American's must distinguish between the politics of the war, and the troops who are fighting there. The troops are only doing their jobs...defending freedom and helping oppressed and poor people who can't fight for themselves! The war and the occupation is a message to other countries in that region and around the world...threaten the American way of life and we'll come and get you! Sadaam of Iraq was exrcuted in January, 2007.
The will and strength of the American people will never be defeated by anyone...NEVER! Freedom is not free!
