Stay In School
In my view...young people who quit school, will probably quit many more things in life in which they attempt. Attending school...and finishing, is a long term commitment...and, nobody ever said it would be easy! Nobody ever promised any of us a rose garden!
During a job interview, (after a job layoff), I was asked the following question: "What is one of the most important things you've done in your life?" I thought about it for a moment and answered: "Stop smoking!"
Why? Because I had to have the discipline to quit, and everything we do requires discipine to one degree or another. And, one thing I learned from being in the U.S. Air Force for four years was...discipline! For, it will be discipline, that will play a large part in carrying us all through life.
When I quit smoking, it wasn't easy, and it took three tries, and almost a year to quit. Discipline was also important, to fight off peer-pressure! They'll always be peer pressure, and I don't care if the issue is quitting somking; losing weight; or staying in school. There always seems to be somebody around, who will tell you "you can't do it." When somebody tell me that, it makes me more determined to accomplish my goals.
Over a decade or so, I have been laid off from FIVE jobs...all for legitimate reasons such as companies closing; defense cuts; down-sizing, etc . I have never been fired from a job because of attitude or poor attendence. In the year 2006, we're living in a world economy, and there is more and more comptition from countries around the world. So, it's more important than ever, that young people stay in school and get as much education as they can.
Here, in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I live, we have seen many companies shut their doors including: Motorla; Philips Semi-Conductors; Siemens; Digital; Trend Technology; Plastech; EG&G; and the latest closure in December, 2006, was the big call center at America Online with over 1,000 employees.
The old days of working for and retiring from a company are over! Job security is a thing of the past! And...today, many companies are not offering health benefits and/or pensions for retirement. The employee is going to have to provide all this for himself or herself.
Discipline! Almost everyhing centers around discipline! There are those who start a project or job, and never finish it. Starting school...and finishing school, should be a top priority for young people, and I offer the following advice.
Quitters are never winners...and winners are never quitters!
* Don't be a quitter * Stay off drugs, and don't hang around the wrong crowd * Think for yourself, and think positive! * Set your goals and be disciplined * Nothing worthwhile comes easy! So, if you fall down, find the courage to get up and continue on. * Never use the word "fail." Use the word "set-back" instead. * The people who don't even try, are the failures, so feel good about yourself ...believe in yourself!
